Arizona's new immigration law will go into effect Thursday without its key parts.

A federal judge has put the most controversial sections of the law on hold until the courts resolve the issues, in what could be a long legal battle.

Gov. Jan Brewer calls today's ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton "a temporary bump in the road," and says she expects to appeal.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat who's running against Brewer, says the Republican governor "played politics with immigration, and she lost."

The judge shelved parts of the law requiring immigrants to carry their papers at all times and police to check immigration status while enforcing other laws. And she blocked officers from making warrantless arrests of suspected illegal immigrants.

Also on hold is a ban on undocumented workers soliciting employment in public places.

In Mexico City, word of the ruling was greeted with cheers from about 100 protesters who had gathered in front of the U.S. Embassy.

The U.S. Justice Department says the judge ruled correctly.

Department spokeswoman Hannah August said Wednesday that the department understands the frustration of Arizona residents with the immigration system.

August added that a patchwork of state and local policies would seriously disrupt federal immigration enforcement.

You all are missing the point - This is a strike against States Rights to ENFORCE THEIR LAWS! This is another step toward socialism, globalization. The agenda of Obama & his Progressive Administration is moving forward. They are repeating history and we all, those who love the CONSTITUTION & FOUNDING DOCUMENTS, need to stand up and speak your mind. Talk to your neighbors & friends about what is happening. VA luckily has good people at the top that will protect our Constitution - Unlike the President who pledged to do so. Oh yeah, he LIES! As for illegals - they are breaking our laws - period. They are using our services & taking our jobs illegally - period. I don't care what your race is. There are a lot of illegals here who are NOT Mexican! Wake up and don't make this a RACE thing! It a Right or Wrong thing and breaking the law is wrong.

My guess is that any illegal invader that stands up for his Hispanic culture will be taken down by loyal Americans that are standing up for our American culture and way of life. There will never be amnesty for illegal invaders and the leftist know this. If it leads to civil war then so be it.

I am not surprised by the illiterate comments below. It seems the less educated one is, the more inclined they are to support this disgraceful Arizona law. Why don't you guys all join the Taliban as your comments seem to echo the intolerance that they espouse. To my friends from Mexico, you are welcome here. Your presence enriches our country and the hard work you endure daily to send your children to school so they don't have to suffer as you is recognized and appreciated. We are a nation of immigrants - how quickly we forget. As the beacon that welcomed most of our fathers to this country states: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door." And for those who think these comments come only from the left...you are wrong. I am a conservative and I have fought for my country. I teach my children diversity is what makes this country great. What have you done
