Thursday night, the Staunton City Council focused its efforts again on an adult store coming into the neighborhood.

Last week, some Queen City residents signed their names on petitions, but now, they are banding together to promote their ideas.

"You can point the finger, right up there to City Hall. They're the ones that let us down," says John Turner, who came out for the meeting.

Turner's one of many concerned residents fearing the worst because of the new store. However, Andrea Oakes says there's hope: the Citizens’ Task Force.

"We really want to work with our council people," says Oakes. "We want to be able to get strict ordinances put on the books to make it very difficult for businesses, such as pornography shops, to come to Staunton."

The group is diverse and growing by the day.

"We're asking them to please email, phone call, letters to the editor, just get involved, come to the meetings and express their concerns," says Oakes.

Susan Rowe joined the ranks of the Citizens Task Force.

"If there's anything that I can do to stop this from happening again, to stop it from happening now, if there's anything I can do now: I'm here, I'm willing, whatever it takes," says Rowe.

"And just down the street from there, you've got Gypsy Hill Park, where at any one time there might be 400 kids in there playing," says Turner passionately. "These pedophiles are going to think they died and went to heaven."

The group lies in wait for now, but it is still distributing petitions around the community. Oakes says they're close to 1,200 signatures.

"We really are truly concerned about increased crime, overworking our police force, and just protecting the property value in the city of Staunton," says Oakes.

The Citizens Task Force will not only try to stop the new business, but also keep more from coming to the Queen City.
