Dry conditions contributed to a small fire outside a Harrisonburg bank late Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at the Wachovia Bank on South Main Street.

Fire officials say they believe the mulch and bushes caught fire after someone tossed a cigarette near the curb.

Harrisonburg Fire Department Batallion Chief John Shahan says it's the fourth such call his crew responded to Tuesday.

"We've had a lot of experience with discarded smoking materials setting mulch on fire," explains Shahan. "This is a convenient location on a curb. We find it in other places where people are standing and congregating and find cigarette butts in the dry mulch that causes it."

The bank filled with smoke but no damage was done to the inside of the building.

another good reason why people shouldn't smoke or at least if you're going to smoke be considerate and smart about by making sure the cigarette is put out before it's tossed...this is how forest fires start people--BE SMART
