Police in Staunton are searching for the person or persons responsible for shooting a 40 year old and a 12 year old in front of their home on Walnut Street.
It was a chaotic scene Wednesday night as witnesses say they heard screaming and gunshots that left two people wounded and in the hospital. The incident started shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, when witnesses say an SUV pulled up in front of a home on Walnut Street .
After a few moments, witnesses say a man in the car pulled a gun and shot at the people in front of the home.
Officer Lisa Kline with the Staunton Police Department says, "Two victims, one is a 12-year-old juvenile male, the other is a 40-year-old adult male. Both were shot, as far as we know, though, their injuries were not life threatening."
Kline says on a busy night like Halloween with kids out trick-or-treating, they are grateful no other children or people passing by were injured.
"Yes, we were very lucky and of course any passersby would be very lucky and this is a neighborhood with a lot of children. This is a neighborhood we've spent a lot of time in and so we're very fortunate no one else was injured," says Kline.
Officers spend a lot of time on Walnut Street because many people say it is a high crime area. In fact, residents tried to start up a neighborhood watch group. That group hadn't been formed before Wednesday's shooting.
"This is an area we have been giving special attention to. We've had directed patrol here, which a directed patrol is when our officers are specifically, routinely going to one area," says Kline.
Without a description of the suspect or the getaway given by the police department, residents on Walnut Street are wondering if they are safe.
"Of course there will be police patrols here through the evening and through the morning as well," says Kline.
With a person of interest now at the police department, officers hope they have the person or persons responsible for this violence.
