A freight train derailed in Waynesboro Friday morning, shutting down streets near the track for hours.

There are many small shops on Commerce Avenue, just feet from the railroad tracks. Store owner Crystal Fisher says she's weary of the tracks because this is the second time a train has derailed here.

"I don't really like going underneath the bridge just because I know it's happened before and I don't know. I'm kinda leery of it," says Fisher.

Sgt. Brian Edwards is still investigating what may have caused the wheels on a couple of the cars to veer off the track. He says they're very lucky no one in the area was injured.

"Fortunately, there were no injuries from anyone on the train that we're aware of and even though there was rock that fell down onto both underpasses underneath, there were no cars or people out walking that got injured," says Edwards.

This track has been under construction for some time. Fisher says while they'd like to see a safe, working railroad, the constant construction is actually hurting some businesses.

She says, "Usually they shut down the whole street and the street's been shut down a lot during the summer because they're trying to make improvements but it does kill a lot of business around here."

The work will go on in this fashion. Edwards says trains will pass through here once again.

He adds, "They'll probably just remove it from the track. That way they can go ahead and clear the path for other trains."

Commerce Road is back open Friday evening, and the damaged car has been removed from the tracks. But the work on the railroad continues.
