The Rockingham County board of supervisors wants to increase it's revenue and they're looking to your pockets to do it. One option the board is considering could be a meals tax in parts of the county.

Bill O'Brien, a former county administrator and a member of the panel created to find other sources of revenue, says everything is still in the preliminary stages.

"Right now, we are a fact finding panel that has been charged by the board of supervisors to look at the options and then make a report," says O'Brien.

According to the National Restaurant Association, Virginia is expected to see more than $10 billion in restaurant sales, which have already seen a steady increase during the last few years.

O'Brien says, "But my understanding is not only would it be food that would be consumed in a classic setting of a restaurant. Anything that you would buy in a convenience a store that would be for consumption would also fall into that category."

There are already localities within the county that impose meal taxes on their own, but O'Brien is quick to add that customers in those areas would not be double taxed.

He says, "I wouldn't worry about it at all. It's nothing more than an examination of options. Again, those options will be considered by the governing body and they make the final determination."
