Monday night kept local law enforcement departments busy. This includes a woman is in critical condition Tuesday morning after an accident west of Staunton.

Virginia State Police say 20-year-old Justin A. Shull was speeding west on Cedar Green Road. He ran off the road and struck a wooden fence post.

The post broke into shards and impaled his passenger, 20-year-old Capri Nicole D'amore. D'amore is currently in critical condition at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Police say the accident happened about a half mile from where the car stopped at Hebron Road.

"The driver came back he wanted to try and get to his residence because that's where he at least knew the area and could call EMS out for her," says VSP Trooper Jeremy Sienkiewicz.

Unlike many New Year's accidents, alcohol was not a factor in this one.
