Kilgore Calls for Resignation

State attorney general Jerry Kilgore says that Vance Wilkins Junior should resign as Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates because he settled a sexual harassment claim out of court.

Kilgore, a Republican, says he's concerned about reports that Wilkins is reminding delegates of his power as House Speaker ... as he tries to persuade delegates to let him keep his job.

Kilgore calls that a horrible situation for members of the
Republican caucus.

The Attorney General was firm at a State Capitol news conference Wednesday afternoon. He said, "I have regrettably concluded that Speaker Wilkins cannot continue as Speaker of the House."

Wilkins denies allegations by two women that he groped them. He has acknowledged that he reached an out-of-court settlement with one of the women last year, saying he did it keep from jeopardizing the November elections.

The Amherst Republican is supposed to meet with the Republican caucus again on Tuesday.
