A power surge in Harrisonburg on Friday was the culprit for some people losing power. Some have also lost some of their electronics.
"I just thought the electric flickered and that it would come back on and that everything would be okay, but it wasn't," says Wanda Wright.
Wright, a tenant of the Pettit Apartments on Chicago Avenue in Harrisonburg, says she and her family were home when the apartment complex lost power.
"My oldest daughter was sitting in the living room watching TV and she came in the bedroom and said, 'Mom the TV is smoking.' So I came out and the TV was smoking, the VCR was smoking, the computer and the printer," says Wright.
Fire crews and Harrisonburg Electric responded minutes later and discovered that electricity meters had blown off the side of the apartments.
Chicago Avenue wasn't the only area that lost power and appliances. One of the hardest hit areas was Wyndham Woods.
"Some appliances got smoked up. Some heating equipment got smoked up. Some motors started to overheat, and started smelling. So we, I think we shut utilities off at about ten or 12 houses, and called HEC to come out and investigate the problem," says Battalion Chief of the Harrisonburg Fire Department, Doug Gaylor.
Gaylor says out of all the electricity related calls they received Friday, he's glad no-one was hurt.
He says, "We've had no electrically injuries related to any of these calls. Nobody's been injured."
Meanwhile, Wright says she and her family have been left in the dark in more ways than one. She says she's been told little about what happen and when they can expect power to be restored.

I lost my computer, Xbox 360, vcr and tv.
Good Luck ! Va power blew all of are appliances up about 4 years ago .. State Farm would not cover them because they said va power cause it .. We were out close to 6000$$$ Va Power stinks !!
What is even more disturbing is that HEC will not pay for the equipment that was lost. How do these people live in apartments/houses where the meters were not protected by the breakers on the poles? I can only hope they don't get evicted due to electrical problems.
