Police say the suspect, William Michael Layne, was found dead in the home on Argonne Road in Portsmouth, Ohio after SWAT teams broke into the building. Negotiators were attempting to talk to him before he was found dead.
Randy Yohe, WSAZ, spoke with a state highway patrolman who was on the scene at the school. He says the teacher was shot and stabbed in her 5th-grade classroom at an elementary school around 8:30 a.m. The victim is Layne's wife, Christi.
Police say there is a second victim, possibly a relative named Stephanie Loop. Officials believe this victim was injured about half an hour before the incident at the school.
Police report that several shots were fired at the home where the standoff took place about half an hour after the shooting at the school. The teacher is currently at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington and the second victim has been taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbia. Both are listed in critical condition.
Neighbors near the home were evacuated by police forces.
The teacher was shot and stabbed at Notre Dame Elementary. Police believe the teacher and the suspect had a domestic relationship. Court documents show Christi filed for divorce two weeks ago and a mutual restraining order was issued three days after the divorce request was filed.
Parents whose children were at the school picked their children up at another school next door. Witnesses says streets around the school were closed during a lockdown after the attack.
At the scene on Argonn Road, police barricaded the man inside a home. They believed he had several weapons with him. After SWAT teams arrived, police were attempting to contact the man and talk to him. SWAT made several advances towards the home and eventually went in to find the man dead. They say it appears he died of a self-inflicted wound.
A student reporter from Shawnee State says there were police representatives from New Boston Police, Scioto County Sheriff's Department, State Highway Patrol and the Portsmouth Police on the scene on Argonn Road.
Counseling sessions will be available for students through the rest of Thursday and into Friday. Classes at the school have canceled for Thursday and Friday.
