The Harrisonburg City Treasurer is out of jail Tuesday night after posting $5,000 bond.
Rebecca Neal is accused of taking more than $100,000 from the city. She was indicted Tuesday on 20 counts, eight of which are for fraud and the other 12 are for altering deposits.
If convicted on all counts, she could face a maximum of 86 years behind bars and a fine of up to $812,000. She could also be removed from office.
Neal is currently in the middle of her term as city treasurer, which will be elected again in November 2009. Back in 2001, she decided to run as an independent because she claimed her then Democratic party affiliation had no bearing on her job.
She won the election in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005. Since Neal is an elected official, she still holds her job, but if she is convicted of a felony, she could lose her job. Another way she may be removed from office involves citizens holding public hearings and signing a petition asking for her removal.

Mrs. Neil needs to be removed from office plain and simple. What is the problem? She is responsible for what her family is going through it certainly isn't the citizen's who she stole froms fault.Pardon them for having a problem with that!
I know Mrs. Neal isn't guilty until proven so in court but I think she should have enough respect for the city residents to take a leave of absence until after her court case. If she worked in the private sector she would be asked to take a leave.
