Harrisonburg City Treasurer Rebecca Neal may have been at work Thursday, but she may not be for much longer if some citizens gets their way.

On behalf of several concerned people, Rockingham County resident David Briggman created a petition ask the circuit court to remove Neal from office and possibly suspend her while the court decides whether or not she misused public funds. The petition is based on a state law that allows citizens to do this.

The petition sites information from search warrants used at the Treasurer's Office in Harrisonburg that allege actions taken by Neal were outside the authority granted to her under Virginia law.

"Given the gravity of allegations against her, I don't think taxpayer dollars need to be going to Mrs. Neal to fund a defense from her defrauding the taxpayers from the city of Harrisonburg," says Briggman.

In order to sign the petition, you must be a registered voter in the City of Harrisonburg. Briggman will be on the front steps of the courthouse Friday from 12 p.m to 3 p.m. to collect signatures. He needs 553 signatures before he can file the petition.

Just who is David Briggman and living in Rockingham County he needs to stay out of this situation. It is hard enough on Mrs. Neal and her family. I thought you were innocent until proven guilty. Also Bucky Berry needs to stay out of this. He seems to be there when someone is in trouble with his comments.

Why is a county resident petitioning to remove a city offical? Is there some other motive behind the petition?

I would strongly urge that all concerned reconsider this hasty action. The City has not seen fit to keep Neal from her workplace -- although they certainly would be within their rights to remove her for cause. Remember, there is no evidence or implication that the City was shorted funds at all because of Neal's alleged actions. All is well and the wheels are turning. Harrisonburg's citizens and monies are safe. What is the motivation behind a petition now? Why cannot it wait? What a pity should circumstances change with time and Ms. Neal should be exonerated (like THAT has never happened before in light of "overwhelming evidence") or at least offer some mitigation. It is an indecent move. It is not a smart political move. It is not municipally, nor legally necessary. . It will cure no ill. I urge the citizens of Harrisonburg ("The Friendly City) to oppose any attempt to oust Ms. Neal. Rise above the urge for retributions and live they way we teach our children to live.
