Alleged misconduct on a school trip by a Waynesboro High School principal and a teacher led to the resignation of the principal. Now the teacher is fighting for her job after the school superintendent recommended she be fired.
Choral Director Tracy Straight admits to having had two alcoholic drinks while on the trip, once during dinner and once after bed checks.
Both times she said were out of the sight of any students.
According to Straight, there was never any policy saying that was wrong. In fact, Straight said chaperones regularly have done that.
Lemons said Straight showed poor judgment as one of the two people ultimately responsible for the students. In addition, he said the intent of a policy prohibiting unlawful substances covers alcohol.
Lemons commented that Straight also showed improper behavior in appearing in questionable photos.
In the pictures, Straight is surrounded by a few boys without shirts, one of whom seems to be licking the side of her face.
Straight said she had no clue that was happening and that she just agreed to take a picture with her students like she usually does, but she admitted she previously had problems with that student, even dismissing him from choir the year before.
According to Straight, that boy told a parent he wanted to use the snap-shot to "do her in."
Straight got very emotional when discussing her job and said this has been very rough.
The panel will make a recommendation within 30 days and then let the School Board decide her future.
