Fire crews in Augusta County are battling a fire in the George Washington National Forest that has already burned more than 200 acres.
The fire began Tuesday at 4 p.m. in southern Augusta County, near the Steeles Tavern area just west of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Fire officials say the area of the fire is extremely difficult to reach. No cause has been determined.
Several fire companies from Augusta County, and the U.S. Fire Service are working to put out the flames. However, the fire was not at all contained by Tuesday night. Crews plan to return Wednesday morning.
They say residents do not need to worry about their property just yet.
"It's no threat to any homes," says Forestry Technician Rodger Moyers on Tuesday night. "But if we get a wind shift, and get high winds and dry weather, it could be a threat. That's our number one priority: protecting the homes."
Some homeowners near the blaze watched the smoke all day Tuesday. They are hopeful the winds will die down.
"I'm not real concerned," says Larry Huber, an Augusta County resident. "Unless the wind switches direction. It's about 3/4 of a mile from my homesite, so if it would reverse, it would be a danger to the residents, because there are some closer to the fire than I am."
Fire crews say it will likely take two full days to completely contain the fire. On Wednesday, they plan to dump water on the fire by helicopter.
