Most side streets and secondary roads were covered and slick and there are reports that I-64 at Afton Mountain is in very dangerous conditions.
VDOT spokesman Eric Gorton says the crews were prepared for the snow. He adds that Highland, Shenandoah and Frederick Counties were hit the hardest.
"I think the interstate is probably in pretty good shape," said Gorton. "That's the first thing we hit. Secondary's came later. We do have some roads in moderate conditions and we recommend snow tires and chains in that condition."
Gorton says VDOT will be prepared in case the roads refreeze Sunday.
