There was a vigil held in Richmond Wednesday night for slain Virginia Commonwealth University student and Mount Jackson native, Tyler Binsted.

The 19 year old was fatally shot in the back after two teens robbed him of his car keys in a Richmond park last Thursday morning.

Tyler's father, Tom Binsted, was at the vigil where he says he appreciated by the amount of support he and his family have received from the community during this difficult time.

I knew Tyler's father, Tom Binsted, having served with him as an S-2 Intelligence Scout with the U.S. Marines in Viet Nam. I never got to say goodbye to Tyler's dad because he was seriously wounded and sent home. Tyler's dad is and was a hero to me. It is no wonder that Tyler died as a hero himself, much the same as his father was. This is a testement to Tyler's upbringing by his parents. I recently went back to Viet nam but before I went tried to re-connect with some of the men I served with to let them know. I had left a message with Tyler's dad on his home answering machine not knowing if I had found the person I was looking for after 38 years. It was then that I learned of Tyler's tragic death.
