A petition to remove Harrisonburg City Treasurer Rebecca Neal from office has been submitted to the circuit courthouse.
On Tuesday afternoon, Harrisonburg City Council member Carolyn Frank turned in a petition containing more than 700 signatures.
In order for the petition to move forward, it needed 553 valid signatures from voters registered in Harrisonburg.
Neal was indicted in February on 20 charges, including eight counts of misuse or misappropriation of public funds. Her jury trial is scheduled to begin on August 4.
Now that the petition has been turned in, it will be looked over by a judge to see if it is proper.
It will then go to the city voter registrar for each signature to be verified.
Then it goes back to court for the judge to set a trial date. The judge may suspend Neal pending the petition trial.
