The Augusta County Sheriff's Office warns that a lottery scam has taken thousands of dollars from several local residents.

They say the scam usually comes as a phony e-mail that claims the person has won millions of dollars.

Scammers try to convince people to give away personal information or money to claim the prize.

The sheriff says you should never pay money to collect a lottery prize and never accept a phone call from someone claiming to be a lottery official.

I received this scam Monday via email. I automatically forwarded it to "spam@uce.gov" where they have a task force designated for cyber crimes only. Another email scam is from so-called ebay. It is NOT the real ebay. They start out telling you they are concerned about recent purchases on your account. That surely gets your attention! Then they proceed by asking you to update your info. on your ebay site, including your PIN # for your card. NEVER give your pin# out! I contacted the real ebay by phone after i forwarded it to "spoof@ebay.com". For my protection, ebay froze my account until I changed my password & other info. while someone walked me through it on the other end. Also, phone calls, pre-recorded, telling you the warranty and/or insurance on your car is about to expire is a scam also to get valuable info. from you. The same phone # will call offering credit card protection by asking for your credit card #. Don't be fooled. Turn them in to the FCC & they will respond.
