Local tourism groups are trying to help you rediscover where you live, especially since this week is National Tourism Week.

In Harrisonburg, they're encouraging people to look into local opportunities. They recognize it may be difficult to gas up the car and get away for the weekend.

So, tourism officials have put together some ideas for what they are calling a "staycation" as opposed to a vacation.

"With gas prices the way they are, we thought it would be wonderful to have some itineraries for visitors and for local residents to look at and discover some things that maybe they didn't know we had here," says Brenda Black, tourism manager in Harrisonburg.

You can stop by the Hardesty-Higgins House in downtown Harrisonburg for tips on how to make the most of your "staycation" or click on the link below for more from Harrisonburg Tourism.

I have been to 40 countries around the world and it is easy to find things to do in and around Harrisonburg. Saying this town has nothing to do reminds me of a little kid complaining because he is bored--the complaint is more reflective of the complainer than the object of the complaint. After returning from Singapore, Dubai, London, Atlanta, and San Diego this Spring, I am still awed by the beauty of this area and even just taking a drive around the valley and exploring without a plan is cool.
