A hold has been put on some major developments for Fishersville. The Augusta County Board of Supervisors decided the rezoning plan for property located at the intersection of Route 250 and Jefferson Highway needs more discussion.
Wendell Coleman, the Wayne District Supervisor, says the request that would rezone nearly 139 acres of vacant land to build more housing and businesses, will bring in more money.
"The project is consistent with our 20 year comp plan. The project is consistent with where we want growth and development,' says Coleman.
However, not everyone agrees. A 12-year tax increment financing agreement is attached to the plan to pay for road construction of Route 636. Some board member say the tax agreement would cost residents $4.2 million in taxes.
That news didn't sit well with those who already opposed the plan for a number of other reasons.
"We're talking about $4.2 million on the table that tax payers will be paying for road construction," says Stephanie Haskins, a Staunton resident.
The board decided to table the issue, which means no action will be taken on the development or the construction on Route 636 for now. Meanwhile developers are optimistic.
"We've been working on this for four and a half years, and we're certainly disappointed it didn't get resolved tonight, but we're not of the mindset that it has been turned down," says Scott Williams, a development manager for Crescent Development.
