In Waynesboro, Dr. Melissa Hostetter with Waynesboro Pediatrics says acute gastroenteritis is showing up. She recommends drinking plenty of fluids and watch for signs of dehydration. Also, If there is blood or mucous in the diarrhea, contact your doctor.
Hostetter is also seeing patients with poison ivy. The extremely itchy rash is usually treated with topical anti-itch creams, such as calamine or benadryl, but in some cases it may be treated with oral steroids.
Central Shenandoah Health District's Epidemiologist Deborah Bundy-Carpenter wants to send out a reminder during this busy holiday weekend. Make sure you do not leave your children in the car even for a minute when running into a store for an item. It is dangerous in many ways, but especially to their health in these hot summer months.
Also related to this holiday weekend, there are a couple of recalls to let you know about as you stock up for your Fourth of July cookouts.
Kroger is recalling Private Selection Natural Ground Beef sold in 16 ounce packages that were in the self-service meat case. They have a sell by date of July 11-21, 2008. If you find that you bought some of this meat, Kroger is asking you to return it for a full refund or replacement.
This is linked to the Nebraska Beef recall that first came out Tuesday. Nature's Promise Brand Fresh Ground Beef Patties sold at Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets may be contaminated with E. coli. The product had a limited distribution and was only available for purchase Tuesday. Check and make sure you didn't buy the beef with a sell by date of July 11, 2008 and UPC number of 20160800000.
