Wildfire Burning in Shenandoah National Park

LURAY, Va. (WHSV) -- UPDATE: 4:20 p.m. 3/1/2014 The Rocks Mountain Fire in the south district of Shenandoah National Park has grown to over 100 acres. Firefighters are on the ground working along the park boundary to prevent the fire from leaving the park.

The fire, which is burning entirely within the park on Rocks Mountain, was reported to park at approximately 3:10 p.m. on February 28, 2014. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Due to the fire and to ensure visitor safety, following trail closures are in effect until further notice: Riprap, Wildcat Ridge and Rocks Mountain. The rest of the park including the Skyline remains open.

Currently 58 personnel are working to contain the fire. Resources assigned to the fire include personnel from the National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, Virginia Department of Forestry, and Augusta County Fire and Rescue. Additional firefighters and equipment have been requested.


The Rocks Mountain Fire is about 70 acres and is still burning in the South District of Shenandoah National Park.

The fire, first reported at about 3:10 p.m., is burning entirely within the park on Rocks Mountain.

Wildfire crews on the scene trying to figure out exactly how large the fire is and how they will put it out, according the National Park Service.

There is no word yet on how the fire began.

The fire can be seen from Skyline Drive between mileposts 87 and 91 and the smoke can also be seen from across the Valley.

The park has closed the Riprap Trail, the Wildcat Ridge Trail and the Rocks Mountain Trail due to the fire.

The rest of Skyline Drive remains open.

We're working with the park to figure out how long it'll take to get the fire extinguished.
