Sen. Barack Obama is opening 20 new campaign headquarters in the Commonwealth.

Saturday was the grand opening for the new office in the Valley. For the first time, Harrisonburg Democrats have a Presidential Campaign Office through which they can reach out to voters.

"I've been active in the Democratic Party for years and its a wonderful experience to have a national candidate open up an office here," says Harrisonburg resident Arlene Wiens.

Political analysts consider Virginia as one of the more recent battleground states. The last time Virginia voted a Democrat into the president's office was in 1964 when Lyndon Johnson was nominated.

Bridgewater College political science professor Dr. David McQuilken says many people are simply looking for change.

"You have a declining economy, you have a war that is very unpopular in the Middle East and a growing discontent with the Bush Administration and I think what Obama is trying to do is capitalize on those elements and use them to put together a viable campaign," says McQuilken.

City Democratic Committee Chairman Alan Fink says Harrisonburg is the perfect location to do just that.

He explains, "Harrisonburg has voted Democrat a couple of times, come real close other times. So Harrisonburg is somewhat of an interest to him. The county usually votes Republican. I'm sure Obama is going to do better than a lot of people expect."

Obama's headquarters is located at 124 South Main Street in downtown Harrisonburg. It will serve surrounding localities including Page, Rockingham and Augusta counties.

I would like to get work to the Obama campaign about the idea of McCain calling himself a maverick. I have thought about this for a long time and even though McCain tries to put a positive slant on it, it is really a negative concept. Maverick in the dictionary is defines as an "unbranded calf on the open range" and "an independent inficitual who does not go along with a group or party." McCain is branded, he just does not want to identify who he looks to. We don't need another maverick in teh White House. The idea of an indivitual who does not go along with a group or party is certainly not something McCain learned in the military. We need someone in the white house who will belong to the Amirican people and listen to good advice. Obama has already exhibited that quality. Please pass my comments on to Obama or his headquarters if possible. Thank you.

Great exceptance speech! I have no doubt we can make health care available to all Americans. However, we have a shortage of health care providers as it is. If every American were to have health care what would happen to the quality of care? Pease advise.

I am very disappointed in Obama's choice for VP. He has lost my support-If I had wanted J. Bidin, I would have supported him for president. What is going to happen to the older single women in this country without Hilary to fight for us? We need affordable health care. What will Bidin do?
