The Virginia Department of Health says the number of E. coli cases stemming from a Boy Scout camp in Goshen, Virginia has gone up.

At this time, there are now 15 confirmed cases, 14 of which are children in northern Virginia between the ages of ten and 13. Nine of those children have been hospitalized. The other confirmed case is an adult from Maryland.

Along with the increased number of confirmed cases, health officials say 50 or 60 more people may be sick. The department began receiving reports on Sunday when boys from about 70 troops returned home after a week at the Goshen Scout Reservation.

Officials are talking with troop leaders, parents and children to try and identify the source of the outbreak. At this time, they do not yet know if it came from tainted food or contaminated water. However, this kind of outbreak is usually caused by undercooked, contaminated ground beef.

Should any more people who attended this week-long camp become ill, they should see a doctor immediately and report it to their local health department.
