Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, a car drove into the Staunton post office on Augusta street.

Officers say an elderly woman was behind the wheel of the Toyota that ran into the building, but they're not sure what caused the accident.

She was not injured, and police say everyone inside of the post office at the time of the crash escaped unharmed as well.

However, reports say a portion of the PO boxes were damaged.

District Spokesperson, Cathy Boule' says, "Customers can pick up their box mail at the window with picture identification until the repairs have been completed."

I agree completely that there comes a time when some people shouldn't drive, but in reality, we have no idea if this is the case here. People of any age can make a mistake like this, and they do. So this doesn't necassarly mean she has gotten to that point, but I do feel that should be checked out to make sure she is ok to drive from this point on.

Yes, I feel bad for her too, I had an elderly woman do that around me probably in 2005, she was having the worst time trying to reverse parallel park and get in the space in front of the clock tower in downtown Staunton, she had me nervous because I was right behind her, and after about 15 attempts and she couldn't make it causing me to hold up traffic behind me at an intersection, I went on around at the first opportunity, just as I got parked up the street, I heard the fire dept. I had almost known instantly what had happened, of course I didn't quite realize she had gone through the clocktower at that point, but wasn't all that surprised to hear of it..it's happening all too often anymore, people turning buildings into drive throughs, but hers was a case from mistaking the gas for the brake, had she been few seconds earlier, she would have hit me..I was very glad to hear she was ok and no one else got hurt out of that though! How easily things turn from simple to devastating.

I feel for this lady. I hope she's not too shaken up. There comes a point in life where driving is unsafe, but giving up driving is giving up independance and most seniors have a problem with that. If you have a loved one who you think should not be driving due to impairment, please go to the dmv website. On that page, you can request a medical review to see if a person should be able to keep driving. If you are a family member, you can ask that dmv not tell who reported the driver for review which can prevent hard feelings when "little Johnny" thinks it's not safe for Grandma to be behind that wheel of a car anymore.
