The Rockingham Sheriff's Office is investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding a man's death.
Deputies responded to a report saying there was a man lying alongside the road on South East Side Highway.
They found Christopher Cornell McCarthy unconscious and badly bruised. McCarthy was flown to the UVA Medical Center where he died on August 6.
A loved one of McCarthy agreed to speak with News 3, but has chosen not to be Identified.
The man says, "He was an outgoing guy. He loved to get out in the community and associate."
He also remembers seeing McCarthy at the UVA Medical Center, where he was flown after Rockingham County deputies discovered his unresponsive body.
"At the time, I saw him laying in an intensive care unit. He was unconscious. He couldn't say anything. He couldn't speak at all," says the man.
The two would never get to say goodbye. Now only questions remain for the family as well as the sheriff's office.
"I want to know what happened," says the man. "Not just for myself but his family, for my family, and if someone did this, they need to be held accountable for it."
