At 4:45 p.m. Thursday, six activists with Blue Ridge Earth Fist, Rising Tide North America, and Nuclear Watch South were arrested for taking over the Dominion Resource's North Anna nuclear power visitor center in Mineral, Virginia.

Earlier in the afternoon, in the spirit of Martin Luther King, activists staged an empowering display of non-violent civil disobedience. Protesters held signs and banners inside of the visitor's center in a theatrical display of resistance to the nuclear industry and refused to leave by engaging in a sitting in.

The groups involved say this action was intended to bring attention to the fact that nuclear power is a false solution to climate change. Protesters demanded Dominion Resources immediately abandon all plans for the construction of a third reactor at the North Anna power station and cease nuclear proliferation in the southeast.

"Nuclear reactors are cost prohibitive, slow to build, and have an ecological footprint that is several times larger than that of wind, solar and other efficiency technologies," says Mary Olson, with Nuclear Watch South. "Every dollar spent on nuclear proliferation is money lost on safer, sustainable methods of generation."

Louisa country resident, Paxus Calta, was among the six demonstrators who remained in the visitor center until he was removed by the police.

"We chose to take non-violent direct action because Dominion and the federal government have completely failed to address the climate crisis," says Calta.

"We are here to serve notice on the so-called 'nuclear renaissance' that the nuclear movement is alive and well," says Glenn Carroll, coordinator of Nuclear Watch South.

Dominion owns four nuclear power reactors in Virginia, and is vying for federal subsidies to put their nuclear reactors online. Dominion is also expanding the build-out of coal fired power plants with efforts to build a new coal plant in Wise County, which has been widely protested.

The Louisa County Sheriff's Office has the six protesters in custody.

It seems to me disingenuous to compare these activities with Martin Luther King Jr's intentions, and sets up a gross misunderstanding. King did not use peaceful protest merely to gain media attention, but to demonstrate the violence and bigotry of those who opposed his ideals. He didn't seek getting arrested so much as he realized he would be beaten and attacked (sometimes by viscious police dogs even) while harming no one, in order to demonstrate the reality and injustice of the laws that protected his attackers. Then, while imprisoned, he worked to forgive his attackers in order to build a future where both peoples could coexist peacefully. Thanks to Ms. Olson's comments, it is clear their sole intent was only to create a media stunt. And this outlet has served their intent to perfection. Yes, the nuclear renaissance is alive and well. Thanks to Dominion for their efforts to provide more clean, safe, reliable energy for their customer base - even those who don't appreciate it.

Not only is the fact that nuclear is the most expensive way to boil water make it so cost prohibitive that no one will invest in it with out massive tax payer subsidies and loan guarantees, but there's the piles of deadly waste that no one can figure out what to do with. Combine that with the fact that wind energy is already cheaper than nuclear and solar is quickly becoming competitive... The only barrier to real renewable energy in this country is political. keep up the good work

Did they realize that while they were protesting a reactor that hasn't even been built, there were two reactors already operating on that site? And the two operational reactors have been providing safe, clean, and low-cost electricity to Virginia for 30 years? Though probably well-intentioned, these protestors were either very brave or very ignorant. Considering that we need all of the carbon free energy we can get, I'd venture that the latter is most certainly the case.
