Lake Arrowhead in Luray was filled with energized athletes in the water, on bike, and on foot Sunday for the third annual Luray Triathlon.
The organizer of the event, David Glover, says the turnout was amazing and Luray is to thank for it.
He says, "One of the reasons we have been so successful is we have a great partnership with the town and the community. It's just a place people want to come back to."
Pat O'Brien, Luray's Parks and Recreations Director, says the attendance has almost tripled since the first one they organized three years ago. He says it's mainly because it's the only triathlon in the area.
O'Brien says, "There are none in the Shenandoah Valley. Luray is extremely fortunate that we have the perfect venue."
With the Olympics in full swing, many found motivation from watching superstars like Michael Phelps and other Olympians.
Participant Nicholas Cargas says, "I was watching the women's marathon last night and if they can run 26 [miles] in Beijing, then I can run three here in Luray."
Glover says, "It creates more awareness for these endurance sports, whether its swimming or a triathlon where you swim, bike, and run."
Team Tri-White member Jim Upson says he found motivation elsewhere.
He says "Anxiety was one of the bigger motivators. Humility and the fear of not finishing all were the major motivators."
