Tropical Storm Fay hits Florida's mainland, and while this one isn't expected to come here, there are ways residents can prepare in case one does.

The Staunton Fire and Rescue squad says you should still make preparations. Make sure you have plenty of water, at least three gallons per person per day. Don't forget your medications, be sure to have at least a week's worth of medications. Lastly, don't forget about pets, make sure they have plenty of food.

Capt. Jeff Smith says the safety of you and your loved ones should be priority.

He says, "Prepare for your family. Take care of your family. Make sure every thing is good with them first, and then worry about your house. Your house can be replaced, but you can't replace your family."

Smith says if you use propane heat, turn off propane tanks to prevent leakage and make sure loose objects outside are secured. However, the best advice is to pay close attention to instructions from emergency personnel.
