Many schools are getting back into session this week, with Augusta County leading the way.
North River Elementary was one school opening its doors Tuesday morning, as students came back to new teachers, new classrooms and new technology.
Many teachers are now using smart boards, a new, interactive white board.
"It hooks up to a computer, you can move things around just by touching it. It's really cool. It's a lot of fun. The kids really like it and really get engaged in those kinds of lessons," says Caitlin Blanchard, a fourth grade teacher at North River.
Since the white boards are computerized, teachers can pull lessons off of the Internet. Teachers say it's a great addition to their classrooms, especially in math.
Another surprise for students is a new cafeteria menu. With students eating two meals at school, workers say it's important that the food is healthy.
"Pretty much everything is going to whole wheat. Whole wheat pizza crust, whole wheat bread. A lot of the cookies have whole wheat in them that we're doing. Taking out a lot of the fat, using applesauce in there instead of oils, and the cookies and the brownies," says Patti Sheets, the Cafeteria Manager at North River.
Sheets says they will also be trying to use more colorful foods, such as fruits and vegetables, since kids seem to be drawn to colors.
