The Strasburg Police Department has released some safety recommendations for Half Moon Beach after two people drowned there within a two weeks.
Some of the suggestions are:
- There need to be three or four lifeguards on duty at all times, not just one.
- The lifeguard stations need to be positioned so they allow for clear visibility of the entire swimming area.
- Lifeguards and supervising staff need to communicate by two-way radio, not by cell phone.
The beach is closed for the rest of the season. There had been no word from the owners on future plans.

So sad about the drownings...I ache to think about the grief of the parents. Half Moon Beach is a wonderful destination, but it is not to be confused with a swimming pool. When my kids (under 8) swam there, they wore life vests, even though they were already strong swimmers. I hope they re-open, but I suppose fighting off lawsuits will make it more costly than its worth to keep operating. Was that was the ultimate goal of the litigants, to ensure that nobody ever drowned there again?

I personally know the owners of the beach. They are great people and take pride in their businesses. I hope they can stay strong and re-open next year.
