August began like May, with temperatures near 80 degrees and sunny skies. Unfortunately, that trend has continued, which is bad news for farmers in Augusta County.

Some were hoping that the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay would travel up the East Coast, but the rain will stay in the southeast.

"We need inches and inches of rain", says Gerald Garber of Cave View Farm in Weyers Cave. He says that the farm is teetering on the brink of having problems and it has been all summer long.

Further south, in Churchville, Dwight Swope of Jennings Gap Dairy has felt the effects of the drought. Corn crops are about 40 percent of average, soy beans about 30 percent to 50 percent of average, and pasture has been dried up for months. One area of the farm has seen only 0.7 inch of rain since July 1. "If we could get an inch of rain for six days straight, that would be wonderful", says Swope.

Both farmers say they're lucky for what they've produced this summer, as some areas have it much worse.
