A Staunton woman who ran over a family with her car before the Staunton Christmas Parade last year was sentenced in court Thursday.

Donna Young will serve six months of probation, three on work release and three with a home monitoring device. She pleaded guilty in May to three counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of eluding police.

Police say she was driving with her headlights off and she was not wearing her seat belt when she was stopped.

When asked if she had been drinking, police say she stepped on the gas and headed toward the crowd along the street.

Young hit a Verona woman and her two grandchildren.

She also faces DUI charges, which will be addressed during a separate court appearance.

I like to say that Donna Young did not get what she deserved. The system is so messed up they keep letting all these ppl out to do what they want and it just ain't right. Kiera and Kirstin are the best lil girls out there in this world and she almost killed them. If 10 mth old kiera was not wrapped up as much as she was she would have died when she hit the ground. And Donna had the nerve to go into court and look at the mother and be like WHAT! REAL LOUD. Now does that sound like she is sorry. She hasn't even attempted to say she was sorry to the family. And if kirstin was on the other side of the grandmothers hip she would have been crushed. Donna Young needs to pay for what she has done. And I don't think 10yrs of probation is enough. She needs to serve some time in the system. Who cares if she is much better. She isn't the one who got hit. What about the lil' girls who have nightmares. What about how they are feeling. Or what about how The Grandmother is feeling.lock her up!!!!!!

Im the mother of the children she hit, and pepole need to remember this woman did not stop when she hit my mother and children, the cops had to chase her and get her out at gun point and also use the taser gun.she was so uncooperative and did not care she almost killed a 10mo and 3yr old babies.she has not once said she was sorry to my famliy she didnt even look at us in court she told the judge she was sorry to the parties involved.Everyone that testified for her said she is doing so good now and not depressed anymore but who cares how she is now what about my mother and children how are they doin.It was suppose to be about her actions on Dec.3rd not now..Ihave one thing to say to you Donna Young how can you live with yourself knowing you almost killed two babies and my mother and you could care less that you did it all you were worried about is having to go to jail and getting out of the situation that YOU put all of us in.

This woman could have could this family and gets out for qwork release? This is simple injustice. I believe this woman should be medically evaluted due to her agressive driving. May God Bless this family and this woman get the justice she deserves.

As far as I'm concerned, she just got by with it! Her actions were a blatant disregard for human life, and her selfish smugness shows through that "I'm a good person" spiel that nobody around here is buying! She'll get hers, mark my words!

It seems funny that with the laws as soft as they are on the criminals that there aren't more of these cases in the courts. When I was in school I was taught that the guilty party was the one that had to pay. It seems that with this case the innocent parties are the ones paying. Miss Young getting a whole 3 month probation is a country club payment. Miss Glenn and her 2 granddaughters will remember this the rest of their lives. Kirsten still has nightmares as she will often wake up in the middle of the night screaming saying she sees that truck coming at her. What ever happened to the punishment of the old days such as an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Maybe we need to find new people to run the judicial system.

People need to be held accountable for their actions. Not in this case though. That is the reason it keeps repeating itself over and over and over and over,,,,,,,,,, get my drift ?

Good to know that Staunton's brand of "justice" is just as backwards as Harrisonburg's!!

I'm a family member of the family she hit and I was in court today. I got very angry when they talked about how GOOD she is being now but what about what she did before.....my sister has just gone back to work after 7 months and still hurts from getting hit and will hurt for the rest of her life, by this women in her drunken state. My niece still has nightmares about getting hit. Her witnesses talked about how happy she is now after going through detox program BIG DEAL. I see my sister walking around limping and it breaks my heart because she will be like that for the rest of her life. In court Mrs. Young said she was sorry to all those involved but couldn't even look at the family when she said it. The sentence she got is just downright unfair. I hope and pray that she will think about what she did for the rest of her life. Donna King
