A new grocery store is set to open in Staunton in the same spot as a store that operated in the 1800s, but it will have a different vision than it did 120 years ago.
George Bowers Grocery will aim to provide food that is produced locally in the Shenandoah Valley.
The store is set to open its doors in November at 614 West Beverley Street. It's named after the man who owned the original store in the late 1800s.
The new owners are two entrepreneurs from New York, and the owners of The Dirty Bean, located next door.
Co-owner Brian Wiedemann says, "Our intention is to make it a destination within the neighborhood. Staunton's Newtown neighborhood is undergoing something of a renaissance right now, and we want to be part of that.
Katie McCaskey adds, "The food you'll be consuming will all be produced locally, which means it travels fewer distances. So I think we can offer a product that is very much in line with what you're currently paying or possibly even less expensive."
The Staunton Creative Community Fund has helped the store financially, and it says the store is a perfect example of small business growth.
Executive Director Anthony Smith says, "They're creating an important anchor in a neighborhood that's going through revitalization. It's a service to the community. It's a service to local farmers."
The store plans to have an opening party on November 1 with fresh samples.
