According to a new report, some parts of Virginia are now drought-free thanks to Tropical Storm Hanna. However, people are wondering if that included the Valley.

Like many farmers in Augusta County, Dave Shiflett recently welcomed rains from Hanna. However, Shiflett questions whether or not it was enough rain.

He says, "While the rain from Hanna was certainly welcome, we need a lot more."

Much of Virginia has seen huge improvements from Hanna's passage through the state. Shiflett says his farm in Grottoes shows that may not be the case in parts of Augusta County.

He says, "We got a little cosmetic rain. It's got things looking nice again but if we don't get rain in another ten days, we are going to go right back to dry like we were."

Just a few miles down the road in Weyers Cave, farmer Gerald Garber says he has seen improvements from Hanna.

Garber says, "There has been improvement. We are going to get some fall pasture, it helps people attitudes. I had a neighbor pull a fence post out a couple days ago and he said it's wet down six inches."

Still, Garber says it's not quite time to relax.

He says, "Overall it's still dry if you look at sub-soil moisture. On the surface, it's improved some."

An extremely dry summer has made it difficult for farmers in the area to bounce back. While becoming drought-free at this point will be difficult, Shiflett says it's not out of reach.

Shiflett says, "What we need is for a system to move in and sit in here and rain for a week to ten days. You know, just a good steady rain."

Experts say dryness is still prevalent in southern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and much of western and southwestern Virginia.
