People have been registering to vote in record numbers in the battleground state of Virginia, but local election officials say that's also led to increased concerns with existing voter registrations.

With 20 days to go before the election, it's getting closer to decision time, but some people in Harrisonburg are running into problems.

"There's a lot of people that went to register that didn't get to," says Alan Finks, chairman of the city's Democratic Party. "So, I think it's our duty to find out why that happened. It may be a very simple reason."

Dr. John Simmers, chair of the Board of Elections for Harrisonburg, estimates about 400 people have received a letter stating there are "irregularities" with their registration. He says most, but not all, of those affected are students.

"We've tried to track them down. We've tried to fix them," says Simmers. "We've tried to get the students to come in, let us adjust this. Let us help you fill out your form. We have not intended to be obstructionist in any manner."

Political parties and independent groups are acting aggressively this year to get people to register to vote in Virginia. Election officials say the push right before the deadline is part of the reason so many letters came out recently.

The problems include incomplete forms or inconsistencies with an address.

"This isn't Cuba or a communist country," says Finks. "We all have a right to vote."

If you don't get your registration cleared up by Election Day, you can still go to your polling precinct and cast a provisional ballot. If your registration is turned down entirely, you do have the right to appeal in circuit court.

Statewide, election officials say more than 436,000 people have registered this year. It's the largest jump in voter registration ever in Virginia.
