Harrisonburg Mural

The Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is painting a mural to cover up graffiti.
To repaint the wall they had the help of the Female Institute for Learning and Development, a summer camp at J-M-U.
It brings together 10th through 12th graders to learn how to be better people academically and personally.
"This is really a holistic program, we want the young ladies to come here and take something home with them that they did not have when they came," says Kimberly Turner who works at the program.
This year the students took on a special project painting this mural on the corner of West Bruce street and old south high.
Its cleaning up graffiti and teaching lessons.
"So often the young ladies are at home they're caught up in their life we just wanted to stress community service, making your community beautiful," says Turner.
"Not only just to care about our own communities but around other communities also," said Erika Figurioa one of the woman attending the institute. "Its just a fundamental lesson."
Its also showing them the value of teamwork.
"As women we need to come together and we are great we can do big things, we just need to have the right elements and know what to do and thats exactly what they teach us here."
The mural is just one of the projects put together to beautify the downtown area.
