Retailers are getting a surprising treat this Halloween season. Local stores say they are having higher-than-expected sales.
They say with Halloween falling on a Friday, more adults have more time to attend festivities, which has led to more customers.
Angie Ramsey is the owner of Celebrate! in Staunton. She says her sales are up this year, because people are buying accessories instead of complete costumes elsewhere.
She adds, "We're actually busier this year than last year, which is surprising, you know, with the economy, but I think it's a good way for people to forget about what's going on, go out and have a good time. You don't have to spend a lot to still get dressed up and go out."
The National Retail Federation estimates more than $5.7 billion will be spent overall this Halloween season.
