Friends and family of Reginald "Shay" Nicholson came together Saturday in Staunton. Shay is still recovering at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He remains in critical condition, following a shooting near the campus of James Madison University last Sunday. Family and friends hope the vigil will help support the family in their time of need.
Shay's cousin, Keisha Nicholson, was in northern Virginia when she heard the news.
She says, "You see it on TV and you hear about other people, but you don't ever think that it could happen to somebody so young."
One week and four arrests later, the pain is still alive.
Keisha says, "I'm just relieved that somebody has been arrested and that somebody may in fact pay for what they did to our family."
Shay's friend Cindy Wood says, "She told me what happened and I was so upset, I just broke down crying and my heart just sunk."
Wood has been friend's with Shay for more than four years. To medicate her pain, she decided to organize the vigil.
She says, "Medical insurance isn't going to cover everything. The family is very deserving and they're always there for everybody else. So it's really important for the community to be there for them, especially people who know them know that they're always there for everybody."
Keisha says, "This could happen to anybody, and if you don't break the cycle of violence, then it can happen again tomorrow."
Keisha says the shooting has effected everyone, not just the family.
"We need to help the family out because they're really the ones who are struggling right now with it," says Keisha. "Friends are effected very much, especially close friends, but the family is affected more than anyone else."
Wood and Keisha plan to visit Shay in the hospital Sunday.
