A special group of students in Fort Defiance have organized an event they hope will help feed hungry children.
Stewart Middle School eighth-grader, Abby Armstrong, says she came to an important realization this past year.
Armstrong says, "We've noticed how we were more of the fortunate children that have food to eat. So we wanted to help those who didn't."
With the help from her friends at the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America chapter at school, she's hosting a winter festival to raise money for the Feed the Children charity group.
FCCLA Adviser Amanda Marshall says, "To be honest, I've had very little to do with it other then setting up and being here today, so I'm very proud of them."
Marshall says Armstrong and other students organized the event all by themselves. They worked constantly over winter break to make sure it all worked out.
Marshall says, "It's amazing that the students do not mind volunteering their time and getting their families involved also."
Armstrong adds, "We had no moment of relaxation over winter break. It was more work than regular school time."
Their hard work paid off though as the students were able to get all of the entertainment for the festival donated. They say it's something that's going to help them raise even more money for charity.
Marshall adds, "That's a big effort itself that we've had everything donated, that we don't have to put any money back towards the cost."
Armstrong says it's also about setting a good example for younger students.
Armstrong says, "That's what is keeping me going, knowing that I am leading my peers and being a positive role model."
The students are also helping out with the March of Dimes by donating money from a dime toss they set-up at the festival.
