No Smoking in Virginia Restaurants and Bars?

Can I get a light? Those words may be a thing of the past in bars and restaurants in Virginia. Governor Kaine says he may support legislation making these public places in the Commonwealth smoke-free. While some restaurants already have a no-smoking policy, others fear it could hurt business.

In July The Depot Grille in Staunton went smoke-free. Manager Michael Brooks says he feels it's a growing trend. "I remember even like eight, 10 years ago, a lot of the restaurants, a good 50% of the place was smoking, but over the years the trend has changed and they've almost gone to almost all non-smoking, the smoking sections would sit fairly empty anyway," says Michael Brooks, manager at The Depot Grille.

The smoking section at Mill Street doesn't sit empty, according to Kitchen Manager David Jenkins, who worries making the restaurant smoke-free could turn a lot of their regular customers away. "I think it might hurt business as far as taking smoking out of restaurants, and public places, it's kind of like a two sided coin, it's going to make some people happy, it's going to make some people angry," says Kitchen Manager David Jenkins.

Jenkins says they've put up walls and fans to keep some of the smoke out of the non-smoking area of the restaurant. For managers at the Depot Grille, asking customers to take their cigarettes outside has been the only change they've had to make. "We've got a lot of customers that have commented on how happy they are that they don't smell the smoke in the air and they don't get it in their hair or in their clothes, so it's going over really, really well," says Brooks.

One worry some managers have is asking people to smoke outside when it's cold or if it's raining. Restaurants and bars aren't alone in the possible smoking ban, Kaine is also considering the same in state government buildings.
