Anticipating an economic stimulus plan, the Augusta County Board of Supervisors has prepared a list of much needed projects it can't afford to fund.

Supervisor Wendell Coleman says the list of projects include expanding the bridge at Exit 91 off Interstate 64. The state has pulled funding for that undertaking, which would cost around $34 million.

Also on the list is expanding Wilson Elementary School, adding-on to Wilson Middle School, and renovating Cassell Elementary. Coleman says the extra funding may also give school officials more alternatives to possibly consolidating Beverley Manor and Ladd Elementary schools.

Wendell says a recreation center in Verona is also a high priority as well as several road and bridge renovations around the County.

He says, "Augusta County has certainly, in the five years that I've been on the board, been very proactive in not finding themselves in a position to react and maybe not meet some of the time frames that might be specified."

Coleman says the Board is still compiling the list and won't cut it down until they learn the criteria of the stimulus plan.

The Staunton City Manager's Office has already compiled a three-page list of its own ranging from improving sidewalks and Richmond Road to repairing and renovating schools to even developing passenger rail to relieve Interstate 81.

I have an idea. How about giving home owners a 30% decrease in the real estate assessment. Oh that's right, the county gets a stimulus, not the homeowners.
