One person is dead after a police standoff near Front Royal Sunday, but there are still a lot of unknowns in the Skyline Drive incident.
The FBI is investigating the case because it happened on Skyline Drive, which is federal property.
The FBI is not releasing any new information or any updates at this time. The incident is still under investigation and no names have been released.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday when the National Park Service called for assistance in stopping a vehicle.
When officers walked up to the car, shots were fired. Police fired back and killed the driver.
An area witness, David King, says, "Well we get a lot of hunting, so we didn't know what was going on at first but then we started seeing the helicopters flying overhead and everything else so we knew something was up. All of the scanners went flat too."
Frederick County resident Anthony Bruno couldn't believe what he was seeing.
He says, "When I first started hearing the shots, I was first in disbelief that something was actually happening and then just stay safe, because we were a couple feet from the back of the police barricade so if we went behind it, I was afraid we were going to be in the line of fire."
A teenager who was nearby at the time of the shooting says he and his friends heard the gunshots and were concerned about their safety.
Frederick County resident Jackson Eiland says, "All of a sudden we just see all of the police come to action, and there's one shot and then there's about a good five, ten seconds of heavy fire and we were like, whoa, whoa, whoa. We were all kind of freaked out. I didn't want to go in front of it, I mean bullets were flying. I was kind of freaked out."
Skyline Drive at the Front Royal entrance has reopened for public use Monday.
The FBI says it could be a couple of days before it starts providing names and any details.
