The man shot by police at the entrance to Skyline Drive near Front Royal, Virginia this past weekend was a Fort Eustis soldier wanted for attempted homicide.

The U.S. Army says at 6 a.m. Sunday, Spc. Christopher Lanum allegedly tried to kill Spc. Mitchell Stone by stabbing him. Lanum then drove away from the fort.

When State Police tried to pull him over on Skyline Drive, a chase ensued. Police were finally able to stop the car, and the shooting occurred when officers spotted a gun on the seat next to Lanum.

Lanum was pronounced dead at the scene.

An FBI affidavit filed with the U.S. District Court in Norfolk said Lanum was suspected in the wounding of Stone at Fort Eustis.

Patsy Ann Marie Montowski, Lanum's girlfriend and passenger in the car was arrested Wednesday night in Chesapeake and charged with accessory after the fact to assault. Details of the incident at Fort Eustis and in Shenandoah National Park were outlined in the affidavit.
