Harrisonburg played host to a candidate for lieutenant governor Wednesday night.
Democrat Mike Signer made a stop on his campaign trail at Old Dominion Coffee for a meet and greet with Harrisonburg Mayor Kai Degner and the James Madison University College Democrats.
Signer is one of four democrats vying to run against incumbent Republican Bill Bolling for lieutenant governor.
On Wednesday, he talked about the need for a more active, hands-on approach to the position.
"This office of lieutenant governor, which is usually kind of a placeholder, should be changed in to a public advocate. Somebody who's really taking on Richmond and standing up for working families, and shining a spotlight on problems we've ignored for too long," says Signer.
The other democrats seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor are former finance secretary Jody Wagner, businessman Jon Bowerbank and Virginia Beach school board member Pat Edmondson.
The democratic primary will be held June 9.
