Rockingham County sheriff's deputies have released the identity of a body found near the West Virginia state line April 10.

Deputies are investigating the apparent homicide of 20-year-old Michael Ryan Tolsdorf, whose last known address was in Staunton.

A hunter found Tolsdorf near Switzer Dam just two days before what would have been his 21st birthday.

Rockingham County Sgt. Felicia Glick says Tolsdorf could have been there for weeks before anyone found him.

"More so as a parent than a law enforcement officer, you think of all the different possibilities and the fact that it is an unidentified person, that it is someone related to someone else," says Glick.

Staunton Police say Tolsdorf's last known address was a room at the Englewood Apartments. Neighbors say the people who used to live at the apartment would have guests coming in and out regularly.

Neighbors did not recognize Tolsdorf from a photo. It's unclear what ties Tolsdorf had to the Staunton area and how long he had lived in the Valley.

According to court records, Tolsdorf faced a misdemeanor petit larceny charge from January 30. Tolsdorf was wanted by police after failing to appear in court in early March. Police issued a wanted notice on their website on March 30.

How Tolsdorf died and why he was killed are still unclear. Sheriff's deputies are still looking for help in the ongoing investigation.

Glick says, "Certainly anyone that was in the area, traveled that 33 corridor. Anyone that possibly saw something suspicious, anything at all that they feel might be able to help us."

The phone number for Crime Solvers is 540-574-5050. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
