A local congressman is donating part of his yearly raise to help some Valley residents.
On Tuesday U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-6) donated $1,025 to the Valley Voice.
The non-profit service provides information from print publications to people with visual impairments.
Goodlatte can relate to the service, he had a friend in law school who was blind.
"During my years in law school I read many textbooks and other things for him to help him in his law school work," Goodlatte said, "And have ever since appreciated those people who volunteer their time to get the news out and other things out for people who are visually impaired.
Tuesday’s donation came from a $4,100 annual salary increase for members of Congress.
The increase was approved before Goodlatte was elected in 1993, and he donates it each year.
He has donated more than $43,000 to 43 charities and non-profit organizations in the last decade. Goodlatte's salary this year is $154,700.
