A local pool is looking for some help right now. Managers say they're facing a shortage of lifeguards.
Managers of the public pool at Harrisonburg's Westover Park face an "extreme shortage" of lifeguards. They are looking to hire as many as six full-time lifeguards.
They're closing certain parts of the pool each day because they simply don't have the manpower to monitor the whole complex.
The pool currently has 11 lifeguards working this summer, but many are on a part-time basis.
Some work just one day a week. The pool supervisor explains the factors that came together to cause this issue.
"The local Red Cross chapter closed. You've got large facilities like the Massanutten Water Park that utilize a very large lifeguard staff. And, these individuals must be trained before they can go on. You can't simply be an individual who knows how to swim," says Brian Moore, pool supervisor at Westover Park.
The pool's managers offer training, but, due to staffing, they can't offer as many classes as they'd like.
