The city of Staunton is trying to decide how much to charge for a new tax, and residents got their chance to give their opinions Wednesday evening.
The city's stormwater program would charge residents based on how much impervious surface they have on their property, including things like sidewalks and driveways.
Residents can apply for credits to pay a lesser fee if they take steps to reduce runoff.
Some residents view the changes as a tax they can't afford, while others say it will allow everyone to equally help with flooding issues.
Staunton resident John Hardy says, "I think it's to where it will help clean up the rivers and help clean up the storm systems and replace pipes that need to be replaced, and maybe some of the flooding that's in the city, but I think it could be equally fair to everybody."
The city council has advertised the Equivalent Runoff Unit rate at $3.70, but that can be lowered. The matter will come before the council July 9.
