A new law allows Virginians a different option to get a concealed firearms permit.
Residents are required to complete at least one of nine possible courses of training. Virginia residents can now take an electronic course, meaning a video or online.
Handgun safety courses at the U.S. Training and Development Center combine in-class learning and hands-on experience.
President and owner Jim Rowe says he doesn't like the new option.
"It's an easy way to get your license. Just like anything else, if you don't show that you have proficient use of a handgun, or they don't want to come to a class, they're going to do it online. It's an easy way out," says Rowe.
However, he says it creates a public safety issue.
"When someone has a handgun and has no training, except online, they have no way of knowing anything about how to shoot," says Rowe.
Wayne Runion owns Runion's Hunting and Fishing. While he agrees with the safety issue, he thinks it is an advantage for some.
"I can see a lot of people that's put it off. Some of our employees have had proper training, grew up, haven't done it because they haven't had time to go do the course," says Runion.
While it may be good for some, it's the others about whom Rowe is concerned.
"Anyone can do it," says Runion.
Rowe says there needs to be more restrictions and training to keep Virginia safe. He's afraid it may be used by the wrong people.
"Well even criminals will try to do that probably. To me it's opening the door to things that shouldn't be in the system. It's just not right," says Rowe.
Rowe says he'd be fine with this law if there was some sort of hands-on training required. He's currently working on a bill to include just that.

The minimal amount of training (on line or hands on) required to get a permit to carry a concealed handgun is not enough to qualify the average person to be judge, jury and executioner.
That is the most ridicules thing I have ever heard! Not only does it sound very unsafe for someone with no hands on training to operate a gun, but how do you know who is really on the other side of the computer getting the permit. Many people get their identity stolen every year now they have to worry about someone getting a consoled weapons permit in their name as well.
ALL THOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE SIMPLE TO OPTANEYOUR PERMIT WITH THIS LAW, IT WILL NOW PUT HAND GUNS IN THE HANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO I MEAN NO ON HANDS WITH A HAND GUN. THIS IN TURN WILL MOST LIKELY LEED TO MORE UNANSERD SHOOTINGS AND ACSADENTS ,CHILDREN FINDING THRM AND USEING THEM BECAUSE THE PEOPLE GETING THE PERMIT DONT HAVE THE PROPER TRANING ,THAT THE NRA CORSES OFFER YES SOME PEOPLE TAKE THE TIME BUTTT THERE ARE THE FEW THAT DONT AND THAT SHOULD BE THE ONES THAT THE GOVERMENT SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT BEFOR PASSING THIS LAW I HOPE IT DOSENT BACK FIER OR IT WILL BE A SET BACK FOR GUN OWNERS AS WE KNOW IT IN VA THANK YOU ERNIE SMITH....
